In 2013 I spent several days in Temburong during a three-week study abroad programme in Brunei. A day’s travel by powerboat, bus and canoe from the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan took us deep into the Ulu Temburong National Park into the lush heart of Borneo. There we spent time learning about the endangered species that live just miles away from the threat of impending deforestation. A short trip down river returned us to the stilted long-houses of the Iban tribe, one of the last remaining Animist tribes of Brunei.
